Lotus Steels - Weathering Steel Stockholder

Weathering Steel, also known as the trade name of Corten Steel, is a high strength low alloy steel. The rich patina of weathering steel is being seen more often in unpainted applications for bridges, sign poles, structures and sculptures.

Weathering steel has a unique, natural oxide coating that when fully mature is dense, tightly adherent and relatively imperious to further atmospheric corrosion. Minor damage to this oxide coating heals itself therefore maintenance is greatly reduced.

The use of uncoated weathering steel typically provides initial cost savings of 10 per cent or more. Life cycle cost savings are realised by the materials durability.

Weathering steel performs well in most environments particularly in bridges. Inspection of bridges in service between 18 and 30 years have shown weathering steel to be a viable option for bridge building.
Weathering steel has been used extensively throughout the UK and worldwide in many environments. It is particularly effective in applications where preventative maintenance may prove difficult.

Weathering steels also provide environmental benefits as well. It does not require initial painting, therby reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds when oil based coatings are used.

Weathering steel is ideal for the construction industry and can be fabricated with ease as long as the correct guidelines are followed.

Weathering steel is available in coil, sheet and plate covering a wide range of widths and thicknesses.
